現代科学では「人種」はすでに否定された概念である。
大量のサンプルから取ったＤＮＡを解析することでいま地球の地表を覆っている現生人類は、たった６万年前の大乾燥期に、それまで４４万年あまりを過ごした東アフリカにあった「科学のイブ」の集落の炉辺から立ち上がって東を目指した一団のひとびとの後裔にすぎないことが判っている。
どうしても「人種」という概念を使いたければ、われわれの人種は単一で、みなアフリカ人なのね。
いまでも稀にはいる人種差別の話が好きなひとびとに言って聞かせると、ふつーの反応は
「そんなバカな」です。
異「人種」間の遺伝子構成がほぼ完全に同じであることを告げると、なんだか、ショックをうけたような、神様に裏切られたような表情になる(^^)
実際には自分の愚かさに裏切られただけだが、それでも直感的に信じこんでいた「事実」に反した真実を告げられるとなんだか世界が横倒しになったような気分になるらしい。
でも色が全然違うじゃないか、とか、鼻の形も違う、とつぶやいて呻いている。
見ていて気の毒な感じがする。

群れをなして社会生活をする生物は個体の識別というか、小さな差異に鋭敏である。
犬に関心がないひとはラブラドールならラブラドールで全部おなじに見え、三毛猫なら三毛猫でクローンのようにしか見えないというが、その逆に恋に狂えば双子の相手でも見分けが付くようになるという。
自分のことを考えてもカタクチイワシが全部どれも個性的に見えて食べる前に一応ぜんぶ名前をつけたくなる、というようなことはないので、差異と意識の関連はわからなくもない感じがする。
